Radiofrequency ablation, also known as radiofrequency neurotomy or radiofrequency rhizotomy, is a minimally invasive procedure that provides long-term relief of facet joint pain in the neck, mid-back, or lower back. The facet joints (zygopophyseal joints) are the small articulations in the spine that allow the vertebrae to stack on top of one another. These joints can be damaged through traumatic injury, or they can be affected by arthritis, causing pain in the affected spinal regions.

The radiofrequency ablation (RFA) procedure involves placement of a small, specialized needle that is inserted near the small nerves in the spine that supply pain impulses from the damaged joints.

Once positioned accurately, radiofrequency energy is delivered through the electrode which disables the transmission of pain signals. This results in a significant reduction in pain and can provide long-lasting relief.
